70 YEARS OF CARVALHO, BATISTA & Cª, LDA - INVITATION TO ARQ. MIGUEL GUEDES
Continuing the challenge we set ourselves to share our history and evolution, as a company and entity of commercial and historical reference, both for the sector and for the city's own culture and identity, we invited Architect Miguel Guedes to write about his relationship with Carvalho, Batista & Cª., Lda, following this path of celebrating the company's 70 years.
""Talking about Carvalho & Batista (CBC) is going back to the beginning of my profession as architect.
I discovered this house when I started working with Architect Álvaro Siza, who coincided with the beginning of my architecture course at ESBAP and the beginning of a friendship with José Carvalho (son), my course mate.
All these circumstances allowed me to initiate contact with the CBC, or to find “that” hardware that Siza needed for a certain project, or
for the coexistence that always existed with Zé Carvalho, and our
meetings would always start at the store (79) on Rua do Almada.
In both situations I communicated with Father Carvalho, who was a person from a fantastic tract, always with a joke, advice and lots of knowledge. I can say that he was one of my construction teachers who, in several moments when we were faced with some doubts or uncertainties in our details, he would take care of them.
Entering that store, walking down that corridor, full of drawers and showcases with hardware of all shapes and sizes and opening the two swinging doors at the end, it was always a great moment. On the other side was FATHER CARVALHO and his good humor, knowledge and sympathy.
Without stretching too much Carvalho Batista nº 79 on Rua do Almada, was always a place of learning, friendship and great disposition, the day we had to go there, we knew it would be a rich and full day.
With FATHER CARVALHO's departure, stayed my friend Zé Carvalho, giving continuity to the work developed by his father, added a lot of novelty and variety of products for the enjoyment of many architects, allowing us to develop products and give “wings” to our imagination.
Thank you to Carvalho Batista & Cia. Lda, in the name of Mr. José Carvalho and his successor Zé Carvalho, for the friendship and support they have always given me throughout these years."
